In an attempt to lure District Fire Fighters and Police Officers into believing Mayor Fenty is our friend, Fire Chief Rubin and Police Chief Lanier appeared jointly at a press conference to announce that they were changing the policy regarding the cuts in fire and police retirement health benefits.
Sound too good to be true? It is!
If we didn’t know better one would think by his recent comments that Mayor Fenty was the Patron Saint of District Fire Fighters & Police Officers.
“As first responders, our police officers and fire fighters are often unsung heroes and we want to ensure they receive the highest quality of benefits.”Mayor Fenty said. If only his comments were sincere. It is our understanding that it is too late for “nice” comments.
The council approved Mayor Fenty’s request to reduce the Retirement Health Benefits in the Budget Support Act. While the mayor may be having second thoughts about his proposal, his proposal is now law.
I can assure the membership that your executive board, along with the FOP, will be lobbying the city council to change the law and restore our benefits.
Stay tuned! |
